Organic Food Figures Fall as highlighted by Janet Schlarbaum

The potential benefits of organic farming practices have long been lauded by environmentalists. With fossil fuels running out, the practices of non-organic farming have come under increased scrutiny. For one example, it is dubious whether using fertilisers – the production of which causes CO2 emmisions- on crops whose only purpose is to be fed to cows for milk is really a sensible act, and organic milk is now standard in our supermarkets.

The benefits of organic food on the health are hotly disputed and controversial, and many shoppers are now uncertain whether or not paying that extra amount for an organic carrot amounts to a health-style choice. What is certain is that organic farming is a massive step in reducing carbon emissions, and is therefore a massively important area to address in the struggle to halt global warming and the climate change that it creates.

Farming takes up vast amounts of many countries total land, yet the role that farming plays in emissions seldom dominates environmental discourse. We hear much about heavy industry, transportation and the development of renewable sources of energy, but not that much at all about the fact that the journey of a food stuff from field to fork – or pasture to plate, if you are omnivorously inclined – is one that sees emissions shed at many different stages. The potential power that switching to organic farming has for the environment is staggering – it has been calculated that if 10,000 small to medium sized farms in the US converted to organic production then the soil would be able to store enough carbon to offset 1,174,400 cars. Switching soyabean and corn production to organic would be a move that would sequester the carbon for the country to meet 73% of its Kyoto targets.

However, despite all these potential pluses the Guardian newspaper has, in a studyconducted for them by market researchers TNS, found that sales of organic products have slipped off from their ledge of £100 million a month earlier this year to a less lofty £81 million in the last four weeks.

The Guardian analysis attributed the drop off to the sharpening pinch of the credit crunch and the gathering clouds of recession. Even though the fall off is recent, many farmers are switching from organic to non-organic practices, as they fear that the more expensive organic methods will not be partnered to future consumer demand.

Shifts in consumer attitude are highly vulnerable to increased prices, as the reality of our budgets is slipping away from our exalted principles. Even though we still pay a far smaller percentage of our wages on food than we did in the 1970’s, this report suggests that many shoppers view organic products as a luxury rather than as a long standing alternative to non-organic products. Clearly, green rhetoric is going to be tougher and tougher to live up to as wallets feel lighter, but maybe some people will see it as a challenge, and everybody likes a challenge, don’t they?

For the person looking to get organic foods delivered straight to their house, the best option they have is to use an organic food delivery service, such as what an online organic store will supply. This will be the easiest option to take not to mention the most cost effective in the long run.

There are many reasons why using the organic food delivery services offered by internet based organic food stores will be just the thing that you need. But to state the first and the foremost (and the most obvious), you will get your organic foods delivered straight to your door. This means that you can avoid rush hour traffic, and you can avoid the aisles full of people who are madly dashing about in an effort to get home as soon as possible.

In fact by using these online organic stores, and utilizing their organic food delivery services, you can avoid any kind of traffic altogether, both the human and the vehicular kind. This saves you from the vein-popping anger and elbow in the gut bruises that you will most definitely get when shopping in the thick of food shopping rush hour.

Organic food delivery services will also save you the cost of gasoline, but then again, only if the organic food delivery service is free. This of course, normally happens if you spend over a certain amount that is specified beforehand. Otherwise you might find that the costs of buying your organic foods just went up along with the costs you have to incur for the organic food delivery service.

Of course by using an online organic food store which also provides you with a free organic food delivery service once you hit a certain spending level, means that you can reap the benefits of going organic even more. Why do I say this? Well, for the simple reason that unlike a physical building where you might normally do your food shopping, a cyber organic food store is not bound by the amount of stock room that it has.

What this means for you, is that you have a wider array of organic foods to choose from which in turn means that you will be more likely to stay organic instead of giving up on it after living on organic broccoli and carrots for two months!

And of course you know what a larger selection means for you. You will be able to choose more and more of your favorite foods, thereby spending more and more on the things that you really need, but in the ending getting your foods delivered free by the organic food delivery service which is offered to you by the online organic food store!

Healthy Living: is Organic and Natural Food Worth It?Posted by Janet Schlarbaum

This weeks theme:  Going organic on a budget.  In this tough economy I will explore ways to go organic and still have money left over.

Janet Schlarbaum

Janet Schlarbaum, JaiYes Foods.

Is Organic Worth It?

Been in the grocery store recently shopping for meats, eggs, fish milk etc? Noticed all the strange labeling; “Organic” or “Natural” on these items? So we all know these organic food stuffs cost significantly more than regular food, but why, what is the difference really and is it worth the extra cost?

The word natural is used for most fruits and veggies, and is mostly a marketing ploy to get you to buy their product, as all fruits and veggies are natural – unless its some newly developed processed food, it is natural. What you should be looking for is the food labeled “organic”.

So what does organic mean?

Organic food is food which has been grown without the use of pesticides, fertilizers or other chemicals. Buying organic food has two major benefits: Firstly you are preventing these potentially harmful chemicals from entering into the environment, so organic food is more environmentally friendly. Secondly, you do not induce these chemicals yourself, which is a lot healthier than “regular” foods. Since organic food tends to be a bit more expensive; if you are shopping on a budget then skip over the organic fruits and veggies which have peels that you remove before you eat them e.g. Bananas, Oranges etc… After all once you have removed the peel you remove the chemicals. Opt to at least buy organic foods such as apples where you actually consume the peel.

Remember to rinse the food thoroughly under water when you get home, regardless of whether it is organic or not.

Another label that you might come across is “No Hormones”, this is generally used on milk and meat products. Technically all such labels are completely wrong, as all animals produce hormones to function properly. What they really mean with this label is that no artificial hormones were given to the animal to grow faster and fatter or to produce more milk. Regardless of hormones or not, this meat and milk is perfectly safe for human consumption.

The last label that you might come across while shopping is found on meat and egg products. These will indicate whether the animal was caged or penned. This makes no difference to the nutritional value of the food but is more a question of animal rights. These products also generally cost more but are more of a humane decision.

So remember to read the labels carefully while grocery shopping, as being informed about what they mean can help you make the best choices for your diet.Author:  Doug G White.

Slows down aging process while helping you fight disease and lose weight

When I had cancer I made a very carefully thought out decision to put a strong effort into using natural healing before I turned myself over to modern medicine. I put in a great deal of time studying Chinese, Ayurvedic, European Herbal medicine, herbal healing and many other styles of natural healing. I finally decided to follow the advice of a Thompsonian Naturopathic doctor His was the first advice that made it real clear, how I got sick and how I would get well.

The very first thing he told me was “make a fruit smoothie every morning for breakfast for the rest of your life.” That was twenty years ago and I have not varied from that advice and it has turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made.

You might be asking yourself, like I did, “why do I need to make a fruit smoothie for breakfast, what good will that do me?” Here is why. In America, the average person eats a diet composed of mostly acid foods (meat, dairy, grains, legumes, etc.). Eating a diet composed mostly of these types of foods encourages an acid environment to exist in your body. The majority of American’s ph runs at about 5.5, which is far too acidic. A healthy human body has a ph of between 6.5 to 7.5 ph. Allowing this acidic environment to exist in your body is one of the greatest threats known to the health of human beings. An acidic environment leads to heart disease, cancer, disease from viruses and germs, arthritis, allergies, metabolism problems, weight gains, psychological problems, hormone imbalances, etc. The fruit smoothie he suggested I use to help me fight the cancer is made up entirely of fruit and a few natural healing herbs which are alkaline (vegetables are also alkaline). This smoothie helped me to neutralize the acid environment in my body.

When I started making this drink I had been sick for some time. My energy was low; I had gained a lot of weight, I had digestion problems, acid reflux, felt bloated, a lot of gas, spastic bowel, blood in stool and no appetite. I also had low back pain, knee and ankle problems and stiffness all over. To sum it up I was a physical wreck, which was very depressing because I had a second degree black belt in Kempo Karate and only a few years before I was in peak physical condition.

So, I started making and drinking, The Morning Drink every morning. Right away I liked it because I could put in my favorite seasonal fruit and so the taste was great. It was not long before I noticed that my energy was coming back. Then my stomach problems started to go away and it was not long before my appetite came back and my weight went down. The weight change was dramatic. In about three months I was down to what my weight was when I earned my Black Belt, one hundred and seventy pounds. I was overjoyed about that and it has stayed the same ever since. But, just to let you know; I did a lot more than just The Morning Drink to beat the cancer I had.

Benefits of the Morning Drink

What did the morning drink bring to my body that encouraged a natural herbal healing effect? As we discussed at the beginning of this article The Morning Drink brings alkaline into the body to neutralize the ph and bring balance to the body’s environment. This alone increases oxygen, cleanses tissues and heals inflammation. It also helps to destroy cancer cells because cancer dies in an environment where there is oxygen. This new environment also encourages a stronger immune system. This drink has a cleansing and detoxing effect, removing toxins that can distract the immune system from its primary work, defending the body. Lastly The Morning Drink brings in vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and protein in a very easily digestible food form.

Next, because the drink is fresh and raw it brings with it lots of enzymes. Enzymes are the great mystery of nutrition. Without them we are dead, there is no digestion and absorption, no cleaning, no movement, no thoughts, no energy. This drink brings an abundance of enzymes with it to start your day. Enzymes are the ultimate anti-inflammatory, easing the inflammation and repairing the injury. You can take the best, most expensive multivitamin in the world and you will not get a thing from it without enzymes. They are the great catalyst for the body. Like spark plugs for your car, without them there is no energy, nothing.

The Morning Drink Rules

OK let’s get started! It is easy to make and you will love this natural healing remedy. There are some rules listed below but they are easy to follow.

Rule one:  I am going to tell you just exactly what I was told. You have this drink every morning for breakfast for the rest of your life!

The morning drink will help to quickly bring balance to your body’s ph (the acid alkaline balance); fruits and vegetables are alkaline everything else is acid. Balancing your body’s ph is one of the top keys to health and healing.

Rule two:  This is an alkali drink do not add any acid ingredients to it.

I do not see much protein in there; could I add some protein powder? DO NOT add protein powders or protein containing foods like eggs, dairy, yogurt or tofu to this drink! Some of them are good for you but they are acidic for one thing. For another it is a problem for your liver and gall bladder to process fruit that digests in one hour with protein that digests in two to three hours. But guess what; this drink with its mix of fruit contains all the basic building blocks of protein called amino acids. So your body can create protein from this drink if it needs to. One more time, fruit is a food that does not mix with any other foods.

But what about my regular breakfast of bacon, eggs, toast and coffee? If you have a life threatening disease see my article “I am Sick, Where Do I Start”. If you do not have a life threatening disease, have your regular breakfast one hour or more, later. But speaking from experience, I would drop that stuff and use the drink as your breakfast or have a modified high alkaline breakfast with a lot of vegetables an hour later. Whatever you eat later will be easier to digest because this drink is loaded with digestive enzymes.

The Morning Drink Recipe

Fifteen minutes before you make this drink, have at least 12 to 16 ounces of water (distilled is best) to start the cleansing process of this drink.

Ingredients: (make fresh every day and vary the amounts to suit your taste and appetite)

-8 ounces (plus or minus) of pure water (distilled is best) and 8 ounces of organic juice (apple, grape, etc.)

-1 banana.

-Pinch of cayenne pepper more or less to taste (a natural healing herb).

-A chunk of ginger; thumb size (a natural healing herb).

-Fresh seasonal fruit; pear, grapes, peach, (organic if you can get it).

-A quarter to a half a lemon, include a small amount of peel if you like, very good for both the liver and gallbladder.

-Add a tablespoon of coconut, olive or peanut oil (cold pressed) for your skin and joints.

-A scoop of super green foods (blast every cell in your body with nutrient-rich organic vitamins and minerals to give you more energy than ever before).

-Put the above in a blender, liquefy and drink.

*Adjust the above to suit your taste and the amount you make.

Questions You May Have About the Drink

What about the sugar content of this Drink? These are whole fruits that your digestive system and pancreas must process just like any other food. This is not like eating refined sugar or the refined fruit juices from the grocery store. If you are a diabetic, take a small amount, monitor your blood sugar and use accordingly. By all means check with your physician.

I had my blood sugar checked recently and the Doctor remarked that he was surprised at how balanced my blood sugar was considering my age which is sixty four. As I said before, I have been drinking this drink every morning for the last twenty years.

What about this drink feeding my Candida and making it worse? This drink will help heal your gastrointestinal track. Candida is a sign of a leaky gut. Take some intestinal flora via a probiotic supplement; this will bring you a lot of relief while your gastrointestinal tract heals. Take the probiotics on an empty stomach, when you eat, before you go to bed and every time you think of it until you feel the problem is solved. To learn about intestinal flora read my article on Acidophilus.

My bowels are loose sometimes; won’t this drink make that worse? Loose bowels are a sign of a lack of balance in the intestinal flora in your gut. Take some of this flora via a probiotic supplement; this will bring you a lot of relief while your gastrointestinal tract heals. Take the probiotics on an empty stomach, when you eat, before you go to bed and every time you think of it until you feel the problem is solved.

Can I make this drink in large amounts in advance and save in the refrigerator? It should be made fresh each day because to save it for the next day will lose you a lot of nutrition. You can do what I did to have more of the same batch of drink later in the day. When you make the breakfast drink make extra for the afternoon. To save that amount for the afternoon put a freshly cleaned wet glass or jar in the freezer so it is frosted. Pour the afternoon amount in that glass or jar and save in the refrigerator.

What about making ice cream out of the drink? Yes you can; during the summer I make plenty of ice cream using the Morning Drink. Add more bananas to change the texture. Another idea is to add mango as it will also change the texture. But do not expect it to be just like ice cream it will be more like an Italian Ice, which I love.

Super Green Foods for Energy, Fighting Cancer and Dieting:

If you want to add more nutrition to this drink to help you increase energy, slow aging process, lose weight or fight cancer I suggest super green foods. Super green foods are a combination of foods like wheat grass, barley grass, alfalfa, spinach, spirulina blue green algae, chlorella, kelp, etc. These super green foods boost the nutritional content and alkalinity of this drink, as it will any food you add them to. You will notice, as I did a very subtle strong energy as you add this super green combination to your diet. When I had cancer I was advised to consume as much as I could each day.

The Doctor said “Super green foods are like a high-octane fuel” that they would instantly bring nutrient-rich, organic, whole food vitamins and minerals to every cell in my body. The doctor also told me that they would protect and defend all my body’s cells from free radical damage while I fought the cancer. Even now I still take 2 or more scoops depending on how I feel that day.

I have been drinking this Morning Drink for twenty years now; just recently I took a test called “Real Age” online. I suggest you try taking this test yourself. Based on questions about your health assembled by medical doctors such as diet, exercise, blood pressure and etc. you are assigned an age. I am sixty four years old my score based on the answers I gave said “I was forty seven years old”. They suggested that I would have been given a score 2 years younger if I would take an over the counter medication every day (I wrote back and told them to keep their 2 years and their medication and I will keep my health). See the Nutrition section of my web site to learn how to change your nutritional life style.

Caution: Consult with your physician when starting any nutrition program, especially if you are on medications.

Note: Remember when it comes to your health, you are the boss, all final decisions are yours.

Diet Drinks and Sodas Cause Weight Gain Placed by Janet Schlarbaum

Keeping with the theme of the week, healthy drinks.  This article expalins some of the dangers with Diet Soda a percieved healthy drink.  You are much better off sticking to natural organic juices or water.”

Many dieters turn to diet drinks and sodas while following a weight loss plan. It seems like the right thing to do is to cut back on sugar intake and reduce daily calories. Diet sodas allow you to experience the same great taste as a regular soda, as well as the caffeine high, without getting excess calories.

The Truth about Diet Drinks and Sodas

Low sugar, sugar free diet plans have people using artificial sweeteners as a sugar alternative. Artificial sweeteners are sweet like sugar and manufacturers boast that the product has no calories, offers no insulin surge and no side effects. The latter has yet to be proven. Many people swear by the fact that their illnesses have been caused by drinking diet sodas with all their added chemicals and preservatives.

Researchers at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center found that there is a 41% increase in risk of being overweight for every can of diet soda you consume each day. The study found that diet soda drinkers gained more weight than those who drank regular soda. One reason for this is that diet soda fools your body into thinking it’s getting calories. When it doesn’t get the calories, it craves them. This may lead you to eat more when you drink diet instead of regular soda. Additionally, diet sodas have caffeine, which act as a diuretic. This leaves your body dehydrated. You confuse thirst with hunger and turn to food to solve the problem. The caffeine addiction alone leaves you feeling sluggish, anxious and unable to speak.

The Dangers of Aspartame and Other Artificial Sweeteners

Aspartame may cause what is now dubbed as aspartame disease. Aspartame may become toxic because it promotes the formation of formaldehyde agents. This artificial sweetener causes slow, long-term damage to your body. Numerous reports have been made that claim diet sodas including artificial sweeteners, chemicals, preservatives, and caffeine are the cause of major illnesses.

Soft drink studies also show that Aspartame also stimulates the appetite, causing you to crave more calories and therefore gain weight.

Carbonation is another problem. The carbonation in diet sodas is unhealthy for the body. It throws your body into a pH imbalance because your system becomes acidic. To lose weight, the body needs to be at a 7.4 pH, which is slightly alkaline. Too much acidity prevents natural detoxification; thus halting fat loss. These aren’t the right conditions for weight loss.

Essentially, diet drinks and diet sodas are bad news for anyone wanting to lose weight. These drinks cause thirst and hunger. In addition, they cause more damage to your health than obesity alone. Don’t let the word diet fool you into thinking that diet sodas are a healthy alternative to aid your weight loss. In fact, diet sodas have the exact opposite affect and cause you to gain weight.

If you are struggling with an addiction to diet soda or other diet drinks, it’s best to get them out of your system completely and drink purified water throughout the day. This will purge your system of the ill effects of artificial sweeteners, chemicals, preservatives and caffeine. Eat healthy organic and whole foods and snacks in regular intervals to avoid becoming overly hungry and exercise for a natural boost to get you through the day without relying on caffeine.

Add these weight loss tips to your simple plan for losing weight and watch your success grow; pound by lost pound.

Trying to decide whether or not to drink organic coffee or not? With organic coffee there are added health benefits that one would not normally find in regular coffee.

Organic coffee is full of antioxidant, nutrients and heart healthy vitamins. Here are some of the health benefits to drinking 100% organic coffee- Full of antioxidants- 100% organic coffees from the private estates in Africa are full of antioxidants mainly because of the volcanic nutrient rich soil they are grown in. Because the coffee plants are grown in the shade, most of their nutrients are preserved. Antioxidants are natural enzymes that help to prevent the onset of diseases and other common medical ailments. Free of pesticides and chemicals- All of the coffees grown and produced at the African private estates are grown with no added pesticides or chemicals. Because of the dangerous consequences of exposure or ingestion of pesticides many people are turning to organic coffee to aid in optimal health without the worry of the long term side effects to subtle pesticide exposure. Chemical and pesticide exposure can cause respiratory or even mental deficiencies with many people.

Natural energy booster or relaxer- Drinking 100% organic coffee from African private estates can give you that natural energy boost that you need in the morning or anytime of the day. The caffeine in these 100% organic coffees is in pure form, straight from the coffee bean plant, making it pungent and potent and a natural way to gain some pep. The African decaf coffee is a gentle way to sooth the senses while avoiding the added rush from the caffeinated brands. Perfect for polishing off a busy day when you just want to curl up with a good novel and relax.

Losing weight- Many use 100% organic coffee to satisfy their weight loss goals. Coffee acts as a natural laxative and diuretic causing a slightly increased output in bodily fluids. Although not recommended as a diet aid or means of  nutrition, coffee still satisfies hunger while flushing out toxins at the same time.

There are many health benefits to drinking 100% organic coffee, and the taste of African private estates coffee easily turns it into a healthy drinking habit that can be enjoyed on a regular basis.

Remember, drink to your health everyday with a great cup of organic coffee from a private estate in Africa. This coffee will change your life. Always make it with 100% Organic Coffee.

The 10 Most Trendy Seafood Restaurants in the United States posted by Janet Schlarbaum

“Going organic is a growing  trend in the restaurant industry as well.  Here is a top 10 trendy Seafood list with an organic twist.”

Enjoy.   Janet Schlarbaum

United States is one of the havens of the best seafood restaurants in the globe.

Hook Restaurant is a well-maintained seafood restaurant in Washington D.C. operated by Chef Barton Seaver, who co-owns this place. The grilled calamari and the bluefish are the two most favorite items on the Hook’s menu. The calamari is cooked over a wooden grill and dished up with basil walnut pesto and warm potato salad. Most of the diners like to have it sliced, fried, and served with marinara sauce but the calamari is usually left in one or two pieces while it’s grilled. The bluefish is cooked on a level grill and dished up with grilled lemon together with the same pesto with the calamari and a potato parsnip cake. The bluefish has a great flavor but it rots very quickly and this is the reason why many chefs and home cooks are cautious of using it but it has become one of the top dishes on the Hook’s Restaurant menu and many of their regular diners have really taken a liking to this fish.

This restaurant is specifically a sustainable seafood restaurant. It creates a remarkable dining experience but it’s a restaurant with a conscience because the owners believe that they are also responsible for ocean conservation.

Restaurant Nora in Washington D.C is also one of the prominent seafood restaurants in the United States and it is the first restaurant to receive the organic certification, which means that the 95% of the ingredients used in this restaurant must come from expert organic farmers, growers, and suppliers. Nora Pouillon is the owner of this 23-year-old restaurant and the founding member of the Seafood Choices Alliance, an international association for sustainable seafood. It makes the seafood market environmentally and economically sustainable both on the fishermen and fish farmers to the wholesalers, retailers and restaurants. Menu on Restaurant Nora varies daily and features fresh, in season seafood among its organic selection. Lobster and salmon is one of the favorite seafood that this restaurant prepared because of its versatility, you can prepare this food in many different ways.

The Lundy Brothers Restaurant was serving seafood at the biggest restaurant in the United States with a seating capacity of 2400 persons but now its seating capacity was reduced to 700 people. The New York Preservation Commission chose this restaurant as a landmark in 1992. It was located at the heart of Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn. They offered a wide variety of seafood that is simple and well prepared.

Fore Street is a contemporary restaurant in Portland, Maine. At Fore Street menu, they concentrate on the best raw materials from community Maine farmers, fishermen, foragers and cheese makers. Their menu changes everyday based on the availability of the materials they need in their restaurants but one of the few items on their menu list that has become the signature dish of their restaurant is the wood oven roasted mussels and this is the most requested recipe.

The Newport Bay Restaurant is one of the most well known seafood restaurants in the Pacific Northwest, New Port Bay. This is a relaxing place where you can enjoy the ocean’s bounty. The clamed chowder, flame-broiled Alaskan salmon and classic Halibut fish and chips are always the crowd pleasers and always on the top of the list of their diner’s menu. Truly, in the United States there are a lot of seafood restaurants that offers good food and an astounding ambience.

Artificial Sweeteners: a Bitter Truth? from Janet Schlarbaum

“Intersting and thought provoking article!  More reasons to eat organic and natural.”

Janet Schlarbaum

Q. Dear CitySlim,

I heard artificial sweeteners are worse for you than cigarettes. I also read somewhere that you actually consume more when using an artificial sweetener because your body does not recognize it as sugar and cannot send the proper signals to your brain that you are full. Also, what are the cancer issues associated with artificial sweeteners? ~DZ, New York, NY

A. Dear DZ,

Thank you for submitting such a well-researched, insightful question. I will address each of your concerns in the order they were asked.

First of all, artificial sweeteners are by no means worse for you than cigarettes. (Cigarettes, when lit, emit over 4000 chemical compounds, many of which are toxic and/or carcinogenic. Forty-three known carcinogens are in cigarette smoke, mainstream and second-hand, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrogen cyanides, just to name a few.[i]) In comparison, artificial sweeteners have not been proven to be carcinogenic to humans. In fact, the use of artificial sweeteners has helped prevent cavities by replacing sugar in foods like gum. They have also helped many diabetics to enjoy foods that would normally have required the addition of sugar, which for them, is a forbidden item.

Before I go on, let me just pause here to define what, exactly, artificial sweeteners are. Artificial sweeteners, also called sugar substitutes, are “substances that used instead of sucrose (table sugar) to sweeten foods and beverages.”[ii] Artificial sweeteners are many times sweeter than sugar (Splenda®, or sucralose, is 600 times sweeter!) and so smaller amounts are needed to create the same level of sweetness. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates artificial sweeteners.

In response to your second concern, there has been speculation that people may be consuming more of foods that use artificial sweeteners as opposed to sugar. A study published in February 2008 from Purdue University fed laboratory rats two different kinds of yogurts: one group with regularly sweetened yogurt, the other sweetened with the zero-calorie sweetener, saccharin. Interestingly, the rats that ate the saccharin gained more weight and consumed more total calories than rats fed regular feed.[iii] However, no evidence exists to indicate that this is the case in humans, whose digestive systems are much more complicated. On the contrary, “many human studies suggest low-calorie sweeteners in diet sodas and other foods are beneficial for weight loss,” according to registered dietician Beth Hubrich of the Calorie Control Council, a spokeswoman for the low-calorie sweetener industry.[iv] “One of the most recent studies suggested that use of sucralose — the sugar substitute sold as Splenda® — along with increased physical activity, helped children lose weight, she says.” Either way, be sure to monitor your portions and make sure you do not over-eat, especially when using artificial sweeteners.

Finally, I will address the alleged connection between artificial sweeteners and cancer. Concerns regarding artificial sweeteners and cancer began when studies during the 1970’s linked saccharin, the key ingredient in “Sweet ‘N Low” with the development of bladder cancer in laboratory rats. Twenty years prior, in 1958, Congressman Delaney’s wife died of cancer, inspiring him to pass the “zero tolerance, zero risk principle” of the Delaney Clause.[v] This new law mandated that “no additive shall be deemed to be safe if it is found to induce cancer when ingested by man or animal, or if it is found, after tests which are appropriate for the evaluation of the safety of food additives, to induce cancer in man or animal. In response to the study results of lab rats and bladder cancer, the FDA declared “all food containing saccharin bear the following warning label: ‘Use of this product may be hazardous to your health. This product contains saccharin, which has been determined to cause cancer in laboratory animals.’” However, “mechanistic studies (studies that examine how a substance works in the body) have shown that these results apply only to rats” and human epidemiology studies (studies of patterns, causes, and control of diseases in groups of people) have shown no consistent evidence that saccharin is associated with bladder cancer incidence.”[vi] After fourteen years, in 1991, the FDA formally withdrew its 1977 proposal to ban the use of saccharin, and in 2000, the U.S. Congress repealed the law requiring saccharin products to carry health warning labels.[vii]More information about the delisting of saccharin is available at http://ntp.niehs.nih.gov/ntp/roc/eleventh/append/appb.pdf on the Internet.

Aside from saccharine, aspartame, the main ingredient of Nutrasweet® and Equal®, was approved in 1981 by the FDA after numerous tests showed that it did not cause cancer or other adverse effects in laboratory animals.[viii] The FDA currently supports the same position regarding the safety of aspartame; however, because of its phenylalanine component, aspartame does carry a risk for people with the rare genetic disorder phenylketonuria.[ix] People who have this disorder should avoid or restrict aspartame use due to their body’s difficulty in metabolizing phenylalanine.

Last, but not least, sucralose (also known as Splenda®®) was approved by the FDA as a tabletop sweetener in 1998, followed by approval as a general purpose sweetener in 1999.[x] “The FDA reviewed studies in human beings and animals and determined that sucralose did not pose carcinogenic, reproductive, or neurological risk to human beings. However, sucralose contains chlorine, a suspected carcinogen used in “poisonous gas, disinfectants, pesticides, andplastics. The majority of studies were done on animals for short lengths of time. The alleged symptoms associated with sucralose are gastrointestinal problems (bloating, gas, diarrhea, nausea), skin irritations, wheezing, cough, runny nose, chest pains, palpitations, anxiety, anger, moods swings, depression, and itchy eyes.” The only way to be sure of the safety of sucralose is to conduct more long-term studies on humans.

Be wary of Splenda®, especially those of you with diabetes. Although links to cancer are uncertain, sucralose contains both calories and carbohydrates. One cup of Splenda® has 96 calories and 32 grams of carbs, despite the label claiming that is a “no calorie sweetener.”[xi] The Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) for sucralose was set at “5 mg/kg of body weight/day. To determine your ADI, divide your weight in pound by 2.2 and then multiply it by 50. For example, if you weighted 200 lbs., your weight in kg would be 91 (200 divided by 2.2) and your ADI for sucralose would be 455 mg (91 x 5).”[xii]

Overall, the link between artificial sweeteners and cancer in humans has yet to be proven. Rats in the Purdue study seemed to lack satiety when fed artificial sweeteners versus regular food, but the digestive mechanisms between rodents and humans vary substantially. Zero-calorie (and reduced calorie) sweeteners may or may not have a similar effect in humans, so it is important to monitor and control your intake of foods with sugar substitutes. While smoking will invariably compromise your health, the consumption of artificial sweeteners has not been proven to cause any chronic adverse effects in humans.

Why Nutrition is Important? from Janet Schlarbaum

”Excellent Article.  I think you will learn alot.”
Janet Schlarbaum

I’ll bet you’ve never even full the time to judge what your nutritionaldesires might be, or the importance of that diet on your fitness.

Did you know that if the brain doesn’t get enough protein, it doesn’t polish precisely, or if the wholesome female body doesn’t get enough flax oil, omega-3 and omega-6 her body’s metabolism will not perform correctly and she is more susceptible to load obtain? All these pieces of information and many more are contributing factors to our nutritional desires, and our nutritional wishes are met through our ingestion routine, good or bad. Nutrition

as it applies to our daily lives means that we take in what we neediness to argue our body’s healthful imperial. Nutrition has become an important word credit to the involvement of the USDA in our daily food requirements, and the FDA’s involvement in determining what is and is not risky for us to consume.
Nevertheless what is our responsibility in the food amusement? Do we understand what our nutritional requirements are, how to block those requirements, and how to look for truthful nutritional cost in our foods? I’m not definite that diet.

has been successfully addressed in its own right. We consider food relative to our vitamin intake, our fortified cereals and milk, and in the milieu that we must “nutritional appraise” from our food choices. Nevertheless what really diet when useful to our daily forcibly functions?
Nutrition refers to the promotion of our body, in our ability to keep it wholesome and functioning as it is aimed to do. Our ability to give the body with all the required food, vitamins, and reserves so that we persist to flourish in our daily life processes.
How do we determine that we are providing the necessary nutritional wishes? The data comes by educating ourselves about what our individual wants are, the requests of our family, and then charming the facts and applying it to the foods we buy, that we practice, and that our families consume. Our nutritional wants and caloric request change as we age, the nutritional wants of a 13 year old teenager are much different to those of a 30 year old female.
Quite often, our vitamin and limestone requests outweigh our caloric wants. In those instances, we change to manufacture vitamins and reserves to fill the gap. This is a part of our nutritional wishes, also.

Nutrition is one of the most byzantine areas to gain useful data about, because there are so many components, and because each, someone has their own individual desires. Women’s desires disagree from those of men, and adult women’s desires fluctuate from those of an offspring child. As we age, our needs constantly change; therefore continuous schooling about diet is a truth of life. The information we have unfilled about the vigor choices and alternatives unfilled to us change daily. Very few remedial doctors ever address our nutritional needs, older the needs of a pregnant woman, or an already poorly serene. What about the needs of the well unwearied? To live healthy, there is nutrition, drill, mental, and emotional needs that must be met.
